Got Loneliness? Why It’s a Thing in Midlife

January 05, 20263 min read

At the tender age of 55, I’ve discovered that there's a kind of loneliness that settles into you at midlife, and it has nothing to do with being alone.

You can be surrounded by family, needed at work, the person everyone turns to—and still feel profoundly isolated. It's not the loneliness of an empty house. It's the loneliness of a full schedule, and of a life built on doing instead of being.

I think it's the loneliness of never being seen because you're too busy making sure everyone else is taken care of.

This loneliness shows up in the kitchen while you're cooking for everyone. It shows up at work when you're holding everything together. It shows up in your marriage when you realize your partner knows what you DO, but not who you ARE. YIKES!

You're the doer, the fixer, and the responsible one… And somewhere along the way, you became invisible—even to yourself.

The Problem with Female Leadership Identities

I see this with my clients all the time. Women who run their households, serve their communities, manage entire organizations with compassion and competence. Everyone sees them as the bridge-builder, problem-solver, and a person who gets things done.

But beneath all that doing? They don't even know who they are anymore. Their relationships are built on protection and helping, not authentic connection. Their own needs? Unseen. Their own pleasure? Forgotten.

I lived this way for years. I ran a wellness studio and the formula was clear: more work = more success = more money. And it worked. Until I burned out. Until I wanted to burn the whole thing down.

Here's what I've learned: this loneliness comes from pushing, driving, forcing things forward—or even just trying to hold everything together. It settles in when you start expecting fulfillment from your efforts. You think, "If I just do more, give more, control more—THEN I'll feel seen. Then I'll feel valued."

But it doesn't work that way.

The more you do, the more isolated you become. Because doing keeps you performing your role perfectly while you lose touch with yourself. You don't even know what brings you pleasure anymore. You've been too busy managing everyone else's experience to have one of your own!

And that? That's loneliness at its core.

Most advice about midlife loneliness will tell you to join a book club, make new friends, communicate better with your partner. And sure, those things might help temporarily. But they don't address the root issue.

The root issue is that you've built your entire identity on doing, and that identity is ISOLATING YOU FROM YOURSELF.

The loneliness isn't coming from a lack of connection with others. It's coming from a lack of connection with YOU.

This is what most women don't realize. They think loneliness means "I'm not enough" or "I'm failing at relationships." But I don’t see it like that.

The Key to Conquering Loneliness

Loneliness at midlife is your soul's way of saying: "We need to reinvent. The old self—the doer, the controller, the helper—she's isolating us. It's time to become someone new."

This isn't about fixing yourself. It's about reinventing yourself. It's about letting the old identity—the one built on responsibility and overwork—die so a new one can emerge. It's about choosing presence over productivity. Being over doing. Pleasure over performance.

This loneliness you're feeling right now? It's not some kind of failure, my friend. It's the beginning of your reinvention… Because you’re old enough to choose better for yourself.

If this is resonating with you, I created something that might help. It's called The Midlife Reinvention Roadmap, and it walks you through what's spiritually and energetically happening at midlife and why the loneliness, the body changes, the career dissatisfaction—all of it—is part of a larger transformation.

You'll learn why your old identity is dissolving (and why that's a good thing), the four stages of midlife transformation, and what's waiting for you on the other side.

There’s a revolution starting with you in midlife. Reinvention is a great way to take a Mulligan and begin anew. Start by listening to the loneliness instead of running from it.
